:: ABOUT THE WINCHESTERS ::

John and Mary were an ordinary couple living in Lawrence, Kansas with their young sons Dean and Sam. One evening, after she had put Dean to bed and gone to sleep herself, Mary was awakened by Baby Sam's cries. She rolled over to discover her husband not by her side. Sighing, Mary went to check on the baby. When she got to the nursery, she saw a figure standing over the crib. Assuming it was her husband John, Mary turned to go back to the room and a good night's sleep. However, Mary noticed flickering from both the lights and from something downstairs. Curious, Mary went downstairs to find the television on and her husband asleep in his recliner. Horrified that a stranger was with her son, Mary raced back to the nursery.

Downstairs, John was awakened by a terrified scream. Startled, John ran upstairs calling his wife's name. Not hearing anything, John stepped in the nursery to check on Baby Sam who gurgled at him to which John smiled. Suddenly something crimson began dripping from above. John looked up and was stunned (and horrified) to find his wife Mary pinned to the ceiling, disturbingly pale, blood dripping from a large gash in her stomach area. Her lips moved but no sound came. John let out a shout as Mary's body was consumed by fire. John grabbed the now-bawling Sam and ran out of the room. In the hallway, young Dean had woken from his father's shout. John handed Sam to Dean and told him to get out of the house. Dean raced out of the house with his brother as his father turned to face the nursery, now engulfed in flames. Minutes later, Dean clutched his brother and turned to look back at the house. His father burst out of the house and scooped the two and ran away from the house as flames could be seen through the nursery window. As the firefighters worked to contain the blaze, John held his sons tightly as devastation began to set in.

Years later, Dean (now 26) and his father have been working as hunters, scouring the news and traveling the country working to stop the evil supernatural forces that prey on innocent general public. Sam (now 22) has been estranged from his father and brother, choosing to try to put the past behind him and build a future for himself with his girlfriend Jessica. In his final year at Stanford, Sam's future looks promising as he enjoys a night out with friends - having earned a spectacular LSAT score, Sam had numerous interview offers from various law schools, including Stanford.

One night, Sam heard noise coming from the first floor of his home. Going to investigate, Sam surprised the intruder who turned out to be his brother Dean. Jessica, having heard the commotion, came downstairs and was surprised to find Sam in the kitchen with a stranger. After the requisite introductions, Dean asked to speak with Sam alone. Annoyed, Sam stated that whatever he needed to say, Dean could say in front of Jess. Dean revealed the reason for his visit - he had not heard from their father in awhile. Seeing his brother not understand the gravity of the situation, Dean ominously stated that their father had gone on a hunting trip and hadn't been home in a few days. Realizing their father was probably in trouble, Sam asked Jess for a moment with his brother. Dean explained what he knew and played for Sam the last voicemail their father had left. Sam immediately understood why Dean was so worried - embedded in the static of the message was another, from a supernatural force - and agreed to help Dean find their father with the promise that he would be home in time to make his Monday law school interview. Dean agreed and Sam informed Jess that he was going with Dean to track down their father, but assuring her he would be home in time for the interview.

With that, the brothers followed their father's trail, encountering the Lady in White in the process and after some mishaps were able to vanquish her spirit. Dean wanted to keep searching for their father, but Sam insisted returning for his interview. Disappointed, Dean dropped Sam back at his home. Before Dean drove off, Sam told his brother he would catch up with him...after the interview. Sam went inside and exhausted, headed straight for bed. Hearing the shower on, Sam sat down, closed his eyes and leaned back on his bed. Suddenly, he began feeling drops on his head. Sam opened his eyes to find Jessica pinned to the ceiling, blood dripping from her stomach, her lips moving but no sound coming from them. Horrified, Sam watched as Jessica's body was engulfed in flames, unable to move as the flames reached for him.

Having sensed something was wrong, Dean burst into Sam and Jessica's room and grabbed his brother as flames began to engulf the room. As terrified neighbors and students watched as the firefighters contained the blaze and police attempted to keep order, a devastated, but angry Sam quietly told his brother they had work to do. The brothers drove away from Stanford, away from Sam's dream life and back into the supernatural fray on the trail of their father and the unknown thing that killed their mother and now Jessica.
